Gray-green to blue-green colored needles, a popular specimen in the Treasure Valley, this can be a very large imposing tree in a small yard. The spruce is a dense growing tree with a pyramid shape. Branches are horizontal and start at the ground level unless trimmed. This tree is adaptable to dry or moist soils and tolerant of soils from acid to alkaline.

There are many cultivars available that are smaller in size and with variations on the leaf color, tree size and shape that provide great winter interest even for smaller yards. If your yard needs winter color or privacy, check out the conifers. Zone 3-7.
