A subshrub, some species are native to Idaho. This plant is found in the foothills and so does not need fertile soils or much water. Drought tolerant. It will bloom primarily in spring and again a few blooms through the summer if there is enough moisture. Prefers dry and rocky soil, can tolerate clay. Red to orange in color, the flowers have a bright yellow stamen.

Attractive to honey bees, and native bees.
