The hardy hibiscus has large, showy flowers that can be 4-6 inches in size and look similar to the hollyhock. The plant is a perennial but it does not emerge from the soil until late spring, so don't assume you have killed it, when you can't find any early shoots. The large flowers don't last long and so to keep it looking it's best, be sure to deadhead it often.
