Hostas prefer mostly shade, but morning sun is good. Afternoon sun, in the intermountain west, will cause the leaves to burn. Most varieties produce a small white flower.
There are hundreds of varieties of hostas, varying in size, shape and color. Hostas are grown for their beautiful green or blue, or golden or variegated foliage. Some varieties produce clumps of up to 5 feet wide while others can be a tiny as three inches.
