There are many varieties, sizes and shapes of the tree/shrub referred to as a Japanese maple. These trees/shrubs are sold as dwarfed, weeping, or upright. It is generally a small slow-growing deciduous tree. The leaf color can also vary from red, purple to green and the leaf shape is called lacy or palmate . In the fall, the green leaf maple will turn a brilliant red. To grow these in the Treasure Valley they need to be protected from the heat and direct sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade is preferred.
