This unusual plant sports a foul fragrance in order to attract it's pollinator, the fly. The modified leaf (a bract) covers a long dark red-to black spike (spadix). Not long after blooming, it will die back to the ground. This is found in Hilda's garden and when it is in bloom it can draw a crowd, not for the fragrance but for its very unusual spike and beautiful frilly purple bract.
